A Hermes flagship store in Guangzhou's Taikoo Hui Mall is said to have made over RMB 19 million (S$3.8 million) in sales on its reopening day, WWD reported, citing "multiple sources".
While the French luxury maison has not officially confirmed this figure, it is believed that this is the highest revenue a boutique in China has made in a single day.
Hermes has been present in Guangzhou since 2004, with its Taikoo Hui store first opening in 2011, according to a press release.
The brand also mentioned that the store's reopening "affirms [its] commitment to Southern China" and "marks a new chapter for the Parisian house in Guangzhou".
Rare bags and exclusive Birkin designs were shipped to the store
On April 11, shoppers from across Guangdong province, one of China's most affluent areas, flocked to the store to purchase fashion accessories, perfumes, leather goods, clothes and more.
Rare bags such as a diamond-studded Himalayan Birkin were apparently shipped to the two-storey, 5,500 sqft store.
According to a statement seen by WWD, two exclusive Birkin designs that were inspired by the jacket worn by the Imperial Guard of Napoleon III were also on sale.
Chinese social media users post photos of their buys and store interiors
Chinese shoppers have since taken to social media platforms like Weibo and Xiao Hong Shu to document their binge buying.
One woman with the username "Atomniu" claimed to have spent RMB 1 million (S$201,291) on a black crocodile Birkin 30, as well as some clothes and shoes:
Other users have also posted photos of the store's interior and exterior on the platform:
According to the press release by Hermes, the new store has an "extensive exterior façade which features a wall with a modern yet minimalist aesthetic".
At ground level, a carefully arranged wooden screen also offers a semi-transparent view into the inside of the store.
