Hong Kong’s health department cancelled its daily press briefing on Monday, April 20 as there were no new Covid-19 cases to report.

It was the first time the city has reported zero cases of Covid-19 for six weeks.

The previous time no recorded cases were reported was on March 5.

Hong Kong has recorded 1,025 cases and four deaths from the disease in total.

New cases have been in the single digits over the past week as social distancing measures were enacted.

A day before on Sunday, two new cases were confirmed, including one that is believed to be a case of local transmission.

No full lockdown

Hong Kong has stopped short of a full lockdown though.

Schools are still closed, and people are working from home, but shopping malls and restaurants that are open are less busy.

Masks are a must for Hongkongers.

Hong Kong banned public gatherings of more than four people for 14 days from March 29.

That restriction has been extended until April 23.

Gyms, cinemas and other places of amusement and public entertainment are closed.

Foreign arrivals at the airport are suspended indefinitely.

A spokesperson for the Centre for Health Protection urged the public to remain vigilant.

The message put out said: “Given that the situation of Covid-19 infection remains severe and that there is a continuous increase in the number of cases reported around the world, members of the public are strongly urged to avoid all non-essential travel outside Hong Kong.”
