The Electoral Boundaries Review Committee released its report on March 13, 2020.

The report charted out the realignment of electoral map boundaries as it took into account population changes and shifts due to housing development for each election.

The report's release signals the next general election is going to be called in Singapore in a matter of weeks or months — or less.

Up for grabs this next general election will be a total of 93 seats in Parliament, up from 89 currently.

WP current holds six seats in Parliament.

Workers' Party's response

Workers' Party, the only opposition party in Parliament, has issued a statement in response to the report's release.

It noted that the committee failed to disclose how it came to its decisions yet again, as well as highlighting that single-member constituencies the party had been active in were wiped off the map.

These areas include Sengkang West, Fengshan and Punggol East SMCs

WP statement on EBRC Report dated 13 Mar 2020

The Workers’ Party (WP) notes that the Electoral Boundaries Review Committee (EBRC) appointed by the Prime Minister’s Office has just released its report, more than seven months after it was appointed.

As is its custom, the EBRC has not disclosed how it came to its decisions.

For instance, while the number of Single Member Constituencies (SMCs) has increased from 13 to 14, the EBRC has not explained why it chose to carve out some new SMCs while dissolving Sengkang West, Fengshan and Punggol East SMCs, areas where WP has been active for many years.

That said, there is finally clarity. The WP will decide on the areas where it can best serve Singaporeans, and make its announcement when the elections are called.
