SMRT technical officer dies after accident at Bishan Depot

On Monday, March 23, a technical officer working for SMRT, Muhammad Afiq bin Senawi, sustained severe injuries while working in a Rolling Stock workshop at Bishan Depot.

The man was operating a hydraulic press machine when the accident occurred at about 9:20am, according to an SMRT statement.

First-aid was immediately rendered, and the man was then conveyed to the hospital.

Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries and passed away at the hospital about two hours later, at 11:20am. SMRT has conveyed their deepest condolences to his family and are rendering support and assistance.

According to Neo Kian Hong, Group Chief Executive Officer, SMRT Corporation, SMRT is assisting the Land Transport Authority, the Ministry of Manpower, and the police with the investigations.

SMRT has called a safety time-out and suspended all similar maintenance works while investigations are ongoing.

The National Transport Workers Union (NTWU) also expressed their deep sadness at the "sudden passing of Mr Muhammad Afiq bin Senawi".

Their union leaders are in touch with his family to render the necessary assistance and support.

According to Melvin Yong, Executive Secretary of NTWU, safety at the workplace is of paramount importance, and the union will be working closely with SMRT and relevant agencies to investigate what happened, and to review the current safety measures and safety protocols in place at the train depot.
