The Electoral Boundaries Review Committee (EBRC) released the electoral boundaries report earlier today (Mar. 13).

The Committee recommended the adoption of 31 electoral divisions, comprising 14 Single Member Constituencies (SMCs) and 17 Group Representation Constituencies (GRCs).

One of the GRCs is Sengkang GRC.

The Sengkang GRC will be manned by four Members of Parliament (MPs).

Sengkang GRC has been carved from several polling districts from the current Sengkang West SMC and Pasir-Ris Punggol GRC.

Sengkang GRC has also absorbed the entire Punggol East SMC.

Bye Bye Punggol East SMC

Deputy Speaker Charles Chong is the current MP of Punggol East SMC.

He is a veteran seven-term MP. During the last GE, he wrestled control of the constituency from Workers' Party (WP) Lee Li Lian.

Chong got 51.76 per cent of the votes, while Lee got 48.24 per cent.

What the new Sengkang GRC will look like

Sengkang GRC will have 117,546 electors in total, comprising these numbers from the districts it absorbed:

• Sengkang West (27,236 electors)
• Pasir Ris-Punggol (54,833 electors)
• Punggol East (35,477 electors)

EBRC's review sought to create smaller GRCs and hence reduce the average size of GRCs, and create more SMCs.

According to the EBRC, the number of registered electors has increased by 134,256 since 2015:

"The number of electors in the latest Registers of Electors as on Apr. 15, 2019 is 2,594,740. There is an increase of 134,256 electors from 2,460,484 electors in the 2015 Registers of Electors certified on Apr. 7, 2015.

Based on 89 elected Members of Parliament (MPs) today, this works out to an average ratio of one MP to about 29,200 electors."
