The annual Geylang Serai Ramadan Bazaar will not be happening this year in light of the Covid-19 outbreak.
Ramadan bazaars cancelled
According to Straits Times, the popular bazaar, along with other People's Association-organised festive bazaars will also be cancelled.
This includes the bazaar at Our Tampines Hub and Woodlands.
A spokesperson from PA said: "For the well-being and safety of our residents, the PA will not be organising festive bazaars and trade fairs with effect from Mar. 18, 2020. This includes the annual Hari Raya Bazaars organised at Wisma Geylang Serai as well as at Our Tampines Hub and in Woodlands."
"As the festive bazaars contribute to the festive mood, we understand that some residents may be disappointed. However, as our bazaars attract large crowds, we have taken the difficult decision not to proceed with these activities."
Events with more than 250 pax to be deferred
Just a week ago, PA opened a new tender for the now-cancelled Geylang Serai Ramadan Bazaar.
This new tender included preventative measures to curb the spread of Covid-19.
At a press conference on Mar. 13, Minister for Health and co-chair of the multi-ministry task force on Covid-19 announced that all ticketed cultural, sports, and entertainment events with 250 participants or more are advised to be cancelled or deferred.
When asked about events like the National Day Parade, Gan said no one knows how long the outbreak will last, and cancellations for large events will be the organisers’ judgement call.
