Echo is a robot created by a fictional Singaporean doctor called Mina Liao.
She was a leading expert in the field of robotics and artificial intelligence, according to Jeff Kaplan, Overwatchโs game director.
Liao was killed in an attack by an unknown force, but had managed to finish Echo, a robot that she designed to help the world.
The robot would serve as a symbolic representation of Liao's work and legacy -- "her echo", as Echo explains.
You can see her origin story here, which explains Echo's creation and mission.
Speaks Singlish
As with any Singaporean, or in this case, a robot made by a Singaporean, Echo can evidently speak Singlish, even dropping a very familiar "shiok" in-game.
Real talk: I chanced upon this voice line while spamming Blinks as Echo-Tracer. (Pics unedited. Promise.)

For the uninitiated, "shiok" is distinctively ๐ธ๐ฌ/๐ฒ๐พ slang and used to convey pleasure or enjoyment.
Please confirm if Echo is Singaporean @PlayOverwatch @westofhouse! ๐ pic.twitter.com/eO3kVFBe0l

Echo is not playable to the public just yet, but we imagine Singaporean players will be looking forward to doing so.
