Indonesia reported its first Covid-19 death on Wednesday, March 11, 2020.

The deceased is a 53-year-old foreign citizen identified as Case 25, Jakarta Post reported.

The Health Ministry’s disease control and prevention director general Achmad Yurianto said Case 25 died at around 2am on Wednesday.

By that time the patient had been receiving treatment for nearly three days.

Covid-19 was said to have been the ailment that compounded the patient's poor health status.

“The patient was admitted to the hospital in an already severe condition caused by preexisting illnesses including diabetes, hypertension, hyperthyroidism and years-long obstructive lung disease,” Achmad said.

“So the coronavirus was not the main cause [of the patient’s death], but it had worsened her condition.”

He said the coronavirus infection exacerbated her preexisting illnesses.

The nationality of Case 25 was not disclosed, but the embassy of her country had been notified when she tested positive for the virus.

Her body is in the process of being taken home.

No mention was made of where Case 25 had been hospitalised.

Her husband had been by her side during her treatment, Achmad said.

There have so far been 27 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Indonesia.

Two of the patients, Case 6 and Case 14, had tested negative for the virus as of Wednesday, after receiving treatment and were ready to be discharged.

The patients had been ordered to self-isolate at home after being discharged as a precautionary measure.

Up till a few weeks ago, Indonesia repeatedly denied having any confirmed Covid-19 cases in the country.
