Two officials were removed from office as garbage trucks were used to deliver meat to local residents in Wuhan, China, reported Global Times.

To prevent the spread of Covid-19, most residents in Wuhan, China are not allowed to go out to shop so officials and volunteers are responsible for delivering necessities, such as groceries, to local residents.

Public outcry over using garbage trucks for food delivery

According to state media Global Times, a neighbourhood committee in Wuhan was found to have used garbage trucks to deliver frozen meat to residents.

Global Times reported that the official Weibo account of Qingshan district government of Wuhan announced that the neighbourhood committee of a community named “Gangdu Garden” had used garbage trucks to deliver 1,000 bags of frozen meat to residents, due to online tip offs.

Some photos of garbage trucks being used for meat delivery were uploaded to Weibo, a Chinese social media site.

Delivered meat was taken back & destroyed

According to Global Times China, 530 bags had been delivered by the time officials discovered garbage trucks were used to deliver food.

After reports of the incident occured, the neighbourhood committee sent working groups to go door to door to apologise to residents and recall the meat delivered via garbage trucks.

The neighbourhood committee then promised to deliver clean and safe meat on Thursday (Mar. 11). They destroyed the meat delivered by garbage trucks.

After the incident, two officials were removed from office and one of them was the chief and deputy director of the neighbourhood committee, reported Global Times.
