Two cases of alleged cat abuse have garnered much public attention over the last weekend.

One involved a ginger cat that was being scolded and hit by its owners.

The ginger cat was apparently so frightened that it peed on the floor.

The other victim was a community cat named "Ah Gu" which resided in Bedok.

Sadly, he was found dead, hung up on a HDB dry riser pipe:

Animal abuse is definitely not condoned in Singapore and the Animal & Veterinary Service (AVS), a cluster of the National Parks Board (NParks), is currently looking into both cases.

Investigations are ongoing

The Group Director of AVS, NParks, Jessica Kwok said in a statement to Mothership that the department takes all feedback received from the public on animal cruelty seriously, and will look into the cases reported.

The team was concerned when they were alerted to the alleged case of animal cruelty at Block 710 Bedok Reservoir Road, and are looking into the case.

Separately. the team is also in contact with relevant parties for the abuse case involving the ginger cat, and investigations are ongoing.

AVS added that first-time offenders caught abusing an animal may be charged under the Animals and Birds Act, and could be fined up to $15,000, jailed up to 18 months, or both.

Report any suspected cases of animal cruelty to AVS

AVS also urged members of the public to come forward to provide information to assist in investigations of any suspected cases of animal cruelty.

"Safeguarding animal welfare is a shared social responsibility. While AVS continues to ensure that the necessary enforcement action is taken and raise awareness on animal welfare, members of the public can play a part by promptly reporting suspected cases of animal cruelty to AVS via our website at www.avs.gov.sg/feedback or call us via our Animal Response Centre at 1800-476-1600."

All forms of evidence are critical to the process, including photos and videos.

Information shared with AVS will be kept strictly confidential.
