Two male teenagers, aged 12 and 17, are being investigated by the Singapore Police Force for their suspected involvement in two separate cases of public nuisance.
The police received reports on Feb. 23 and 25, about spittle that was found on lift mirrors and buttons at Punggol Walk and Ang Mo Kio Street 32 respectively.
The seriousness of the issue is compounded by heightened sensitivity in matters of hygiene, as the country battles the Covid-19 outbreak.
As of Feb. 27, Singapore has 96 confirmed cases of the virus, among which 66 are discharged and recovered.
The Police added that the incidents had caused alarm and annoyance, and that infections can spread indirectly through contaminated surfaces.
They also called such behaviour "inconsiderate and irresponsible".
Through ground enquiries and with the aid of images from police cameras, officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division established the identities of the teenagers.
Investigations against them are ongoing.
Those convicted of public nuisance will be liable to a fine of up to S$2,000.
If the act potentially causes injury, danger or annoyance to the public, it carries an imprisonment of up to three months, a fine of up to S$2,000, or both.
Previously, three teenage boys were also investigated for spitting on the lift buttons at Rumbia LRT station in Sengkang.
