Covid-19: South Korea reports 70 more cases & 1 more death, 833 total cases

South Korea reports a total of 231 new cases by the end of Feb. 24, including the 161 cases reported earlier on.

According to Yonhap news agency, the total confirmed cases soared to a whopping 833.

13 soldiers infected

Among the newly reported cases were 13 soldiers, resulting in around 7,500 others being quarantined to prevent the spread in the barracks.

Among these 13 infected soldiers, 10 are from the Army and one each from the Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps.

As of Feb. 24, South Korea also discharged another 4 patients, bringing the total discharged cases to 22.

According to KBS News, the country also reported two more deaths reported from Daenam Hospital in Cheongdo.

28,000 in Daegu with flu symptoms isolated

The health authorities also announced that over 28,000 residents in Daegu have reported flu symptoms in the past two weeks and these residents will be isolated as a precautionary measure.

The authorities are focusing their resources on the containment of Covid-19 in the southeastern city of Daegu where 60 per cent of the total cases came from. 15 per cent of the total cases came from the hospital in Cheongdo.

Of the 231 new cases confirmed today, 205 were from Daegu.

The authorities have also placed 9,334 members of Shincheonji church in self-quarantine. Of those, 1,248 have displayed flu symptoms.

Officials expressed concerns that if the containment is not successful, the spread of Covid-19 could become nationwide as local transmission expands.

South Korea's Vice Health and Welfare Minister Kim Gang-lip said that the authorities will try to stabilise the situation within four weeks, Yonhap reported.
