A Singapore Airlines passenger in the first class cabin allegedly found a screw in his soup during the flight.

Discovered screw in soup

The passenger, known only as Will, was writing a review of a first class flight SQ285 from Singapore to Auckland on Jan. 1.

According to his flight review, he was full of praise for the first class cabin, service and in-flight amenities.

While the meals appeared to be excellent, he described how one particular "incident" left him with no appetite.

While he was sipping on some pumpkin mushroom soup, he allegedly found a screw inside.

Here's a gif of it:

The passenger claimed that the cabin crew immediately offered him a S$200 voucher as service recovery.

He also subsequently wrote a letter to the airline, and shared their explanation of the incident in his flight review.

Apparently, the screw came from a kitchen blender and was mixed into the soup bowl. It had allegedly passed the metal detector and was delivered on to the plane.

The passenger concluded his review by saying:

"If I don't have that mental screw in my mouth, I would totally give this journey a 5 out of 5 rating.... Can you imagine what would happen if I ate the screw and got sent to the hospital?"

Mothership has reached out to Singapore Airlines for their statement.

SIA aware of the incident

In response to Mothership's queries, SIA has confirmed that they are aware of the incident.

They also sincerely apologise to the customer for the incident and the distress it had caused.

In response, they have worked with their catering provider to inspect all kitchen equipment and utensils.

Their caterer has also implemented metal detection for all meals prepared at their facility and they are also exploring new kitchen utensils that can reduce this risk.

This is their full statement:

"Singapore Airlines regrets that a customer travelling on flight SQ285 from Singapore to Auckland on 1 January 2020 had found a screw in one of the meals that was served on board . We sincerely apologise to the customer for this unfortunate incident and the distress it had caused.

We immediately worked with our catering provider to inspect all kitchen equipment and utensils. Staff were also reminded to observe strict food-handling safety procedures.
