A 23-year-old student from National University of Singapore (NUS) pleaded guilty to climbing into his ex-girlfriend's home and strangling her.

Begged her not to end their relationship

The accused, Yin Zi Qin, was a second-year dental student at NUS at the time, and had dated the victim, 21, for almost two years, according to court documents.

On the morning of May 9, 2019, the victim broke up with Yin over WhatsApp.

Later that night, Yin entered the compound of the victim's home, informing the victim that he was at her house and that he wanted to speak to her.

The victim, who was out with her friends, rushed home to meet Yin around midnight on May 10.

They met at the basement and entered the victim's bedroom by climbing into her window from an adjacent showroom unit.

In her bedroom, he presented her with roses, begged her for forgiveness, and asked her not to end their relationship.

When she declined, he banged his head against the wall and remained silent for a while.

Strangled victim & pressed thumb against her eye until it bled

Yin said he was upset, and the victim asked him to listen to her, but he suddenly placed both his hands on her neck and strangled her.

The victim screamed and struggled against his grip. He released her but then pressed his thumb against her left eye firmly, causing her left eye to bleed.

The victim blacked out, and found herself lying face down on the floor when she regained consciousness shortly after.

Yin apologised to her and climbed out of the unit through her bedroom after she told him to leave.

As he was leaving, he heard the victim's mother ask her who had hit her, and decided to return to her bedroom to seek her parents' forgiveness.

On his way back, he encountered the victim's stepfather, who swiftly pinned him to the ground, while the victim's mother called the police.

She told the police that someone had "barged into the house and hammer my daughter. Her eyes has blood".

The victim went to hospital with pain in her eye and blurred vision.

She was diagnosed with abrasions on her neck, and an abnormally swollen eye with bloody tears, and was given three weeks of medical leave.

She has a few scars on her neck, but no other permanent injuries.

For voluntarily causing hurt, he can be jailed for up to two years, fined a maximum S$5,000, or both.
