Muhyiddin Yassim, the president of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu), has been appointed as the eighth Prime Minister of Malaysia.
The Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Malaysia's king, announced on Feb. 29 via the comptroller of the Royal Household that he had selected the 72-year-old Muhyiddin.
According to Malaysiakini, Muhyiddin convinced the king that he had the support of a majority of MPs in the Dewan Rakyat, Malaysia's Parliament.
Change in support
Both UMNO and PAS had previously backed Mahathir.
However, they eventually retracted their support and called for snap elections when Mahathir stated that he could not work with UMNO and wanted to form a government not based on party lines.
