The Ministry of Education (MOE) released a video on Friday (Jan. 31) that explains how and when to use a surgical mask.

This video is part of an education package to be announced next week, to help students combat the outbreak of the Wuhan virus.

Don't need mask if you're well

The video explained that masks were used to protect others around people who were unwell.

Coronaviruses can spread like other respiratory diseases, where particles discharged from an infected person through coughing or sneezing could transmit the virus to a healthy person in close contact.

Surgical masks blocks large particle droplets and splatter, reducing the spread of the virus.

Avoid touching face & rubbing eyes

The video also explains that particles containing the virus may also be present on objects, due to splattering of discharge from infected people.

As such, it is advised that people should avoid rubbing their eyes or touching their faces, to prevent self-infection.

Wear a mask if you have cough, fever or runny nose

The video reminds viewers to use masks responsibly, ensuring that everyone has enough.

Those who are unwell, having a cough, fever, or runny nose should wear a mask to prevent spreading of viruses to others.

Education minister Ong Ye Kung also shared the video on his Facebook on Saturday, adding that teachers are using the virus as lessons to educate students on how to take precautions to limit the spread.

According to Ong, education is a "key defence" against the virus.
