A 55-year-old man was allegedly punched by an e-bike rider while walking home with his wife in the evening.

Punched pedestrian

Shin Min Daily News reported that the victim and his wife were walking along a pedestrian pathway near Blk 709 Woodlands Avenue 7 on Feb. 1, around 9pm.

They then heard a loud honking noise, and managed to avoid the e-bike rider.

The rider nearly knocked into another pedestrian further ahead and dismounted his bike, allegedly to shout: "This is your grandfather's road ah?"

The e-bike rider then reportedly punched the 55-year-old man in the chin, leading him to fall on to the floor.

The 55-year-old told Shin Min that the man then straddled him and continued punching him. His wife tried to pull the man away but the man came back to kick the victim's ribcage, waist and lower body.

Two other pedestrians managed to hold the e-bike rider off as the victim's wife called the police.

E-bike rider apparently fled the scene, leaving his son behind

Shin Min reported that the e-bike rider had been with his son, who is around 10 years old.

According to the victim, the son had repeatedly told his father to stop during the incident.

But after the man had heard that his wife was calling the police, he allegedly fled the scene on his e-bike, leaving his son behind.

When the rider eventually returned for his son, the victim claimed that the man also tried to trip his wife.

Fractured ribs, optic nerves injured

His face was completely bloody from the incident, the victim said.

He was sent to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, where he was found to have suffered multiple fractures in his ribcage. His right eye was also injured, leaving only 30 per cent of vision.

Shin Min reported that he was warded for two days, and was unable to go to work for the next seven days. He told the Chinese daily that he spent over S$1,000 on his medical bills.

In response to Mothership's queries, the police said that they were alerted to a case of voluntarily causing hurt along Blk 709 Woodlands Drive at around 8:45pm on Feb. 1.

Police investigations are ongoing.

The riding of PMDs and e-bikes are not allowed on pedestrian footpaths, according to the Active Mobility Act.
