A 56-year-old Chinese national from Wuhan has been confirmed as the fifth person infected by the novel coronavirus in Singapore.

This is according to the Ministry of Health on Jan. 27.

As of Jan. 27 noon, there were a total of 119 suspected cases in Singapore with 62 of them tested negative for the coronavirus, while the test results for the remaining 57 cases are still pending.

Four cases tested positive.

5th confirmed case

The woman arrived in Singapore with her family on Jan. 18 and she is now isolated at the National Centre for Infectious Diseases (NCID).

She is currently in stable condition, MOH added.

MOH said that the Chinese national was "asymptomatic" during her flight to Singapore, but later developed symptoms on Jan. 24.

She was taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) on Jan. 26 and was classified as a suspect case.

The 56-year-old and her family had been staying at Ceylon Road prior to visiting TTSH.

Since onset of symptoms on 24 January, the case had remained in her home until she was conveyed to hospital, MOH addded.

She was subsequently isolated in NCID and the test results confirmed that she has been infected on Jan. 27 at 2pm.

“She has no known links to the other confirmed imported cases,” MOH added.

MOH updated that there are a total of 115 close contacts from the first four confirmed cases, of which 86 of them are still in Singapore.

Out of these 86, MOH managed to contact 75 of them and efforts to contact the remaining 11 close contacts are underway.

These close contacts will be quarantined for 14 days since the last they interacted with the infected patient, while other identified contacts are classified as "low risk" and will be placed under active surveillance.
