One Telok Blangah resident, known only as Lee, told Mothership that she spent her Chinese New Year mostly without electricity in her new BTO flat.

Power outage supposedly began on Jan. 24

Lee, who lives at 91A Telok Blangah Street 31, shared that she noticed the power outage during the evening of Jan. 24 (CNY's Eve).

She said she reached home at 9pm after her reunion dinner to discover that she had no electricity.

Other units were also affected, according to her. A neighbour on another floor had told her that the disruption began sometime in the afternoon.

While she said that it was not the whole block that was affected, she stated it was likely a few units in their stack or column.

Lee said her family has been living there for almost two years, and this was also apparently not the first instance of power disruption. Two weeks before this incident, Lee claimed that the lifts in her block malfunctioned.

Issue allegedly unresolved for days

Lee claimed that a contractor sent by the town council came at night on Jan. 24, but was unable to help. She also said she was told that someone would be sent to her unit after CNY.

On Jan. 28, five days after the disruptions began, she claimed that a contractor visited her flat again but apparently, could not resolve the issue.

Lee said that she spent CNY with her husband and 18-month-old baby, without working electrical appliances and lights.

For instance, the fan, fridge, internet router, and air-conditioning were all not functioning.

"Most of the lights don’t work, except the ones in the toilet. And one lamp in the living room. I don’t know which was worse -- sleeping without a fan or having everything in our fridge go bad (we had stocked up lots of food and ice-cream for CNY)."

She added that she had paid her conservancy and electricity bills on time, and was certainly not expecting to "live in darkness and stuffy air".

Mothership understands that on Jan. 30, another contractor confirmed that electricity is flowing in Lee's unit. However, most of her appliances have to be replaced as they have been 'fried' due to the power surge.

West Coast Town Council aware of incident

In response to Mothership's queries, West Coast Town Council said that they are "aware of the incident".

The Town Council stated that the "power tripped" at 11:15am on Jan. 24, but was restored on the same day at 3:15pm.

They also added that they had visited a few affected units on Jan. 28 with their contractor.

They are currently investigating the incident.

This is the full statement:

"The Town Council is aware of the incident. The power tripped at 11.15am on 24 Jan 2020 and it was restored at 3.15pm. We have also visited a few affected units on 28 Jan 2020 with our contractor. We are currently investigating the incident."
