The Chinese state media have reported the first death from Wuhan virus in Hainan province, an island with a population of about nine million people at the southernmost point of China, on Jan. 27.

The latest update revealed that there are 31 confirmed cases in Hainan, with four being critically-ill and one case of death.

Latest update on Wuhan virus cases in China

A total of over 2,800 confirmed cases and 81 death cases in China have been reported.

More than two-third of the deaths have occurred in Wuhan, in the Hubei province.

The city where the virus outbreak started currently has 698 confirmed cases and 63 death cases.

Besides Wuhan city, 13 other death cases were reportedly from Hubei province too.

Outside of the Hubei province, one death case has been reported in Henan, Shanghai, Heilongjiang, Hebei each as well as the latest case in Hainan.

First death in Hainan

The Chinese state media reported that the patient who died from the virus in Hainan is an 80-year-old woman, surnamed Xu.

The elderly lady had a previous medical history of cerebral ischemic stroke.

According to the report, Xu's son was first quarantined as a suspected case at a local hospital after showing symptoms.

Xu's family drove to Wuhan on Jan. 17, and Xu's son was unwell two days later.

Xu and her daughter-in-law were both quarantined at home after that. Both her son and daughter-in-law were tested negative for the coronavirus.

On Jan. 27, Xu felt unwell and was sent to the hospital but efforts to save her life proved futile. Xu was later tested positive for the coronavirus.
