Suspected arson attack in South Korea motel kills two, injures 31

A suspect confessed to the authorities.

Two people were killed and 31 others were injured in a suspected case of arson in Gwangju, South Korea.

According to Yonhap News, quoting Gwangju fire officials, the fire broke out in a five-story motel on the morning of Dec. 22 at 5:45 am and was put out at around 6:07 am.

The two casualties were are both men, aged 49 and 22.

However, the death toll may rise as five of the injured 31 people treated for burns, smoke inhalation and other injuries remain unconscious.

Suspect confessed

Yonhap said that a suspect, a 39-year-old man only known by his surname "Kim", had been identified.

Kim allegedly set fire to a pillow before leaving the motel.

Most of the 32 rooms of the motel were occupied at the time of the fire.

He confessed to the police, who are conducting a full investigation.
