Media entertainment and content company mm2 Entertainment and Cathay Cineplexes have announced a joint initiative, Go Local Go Cinema, launching in 2020.
Under this initiative, Singaporeans and PRs will be offered free tickets to watch local movies from mm2 Entertainment.
At least three of such local films will be produced by mm2 Entertainment and screened at eight Cathay Cineplexes outlets.
The first movie slated for production is Writing Letters, a film produced in collaboration with Mocha Chai Laboratories.
The movie will be directed by Chai Yee Wei, who previously worked on films such as That Girl in Pinafore in 2013 and Twisted in 2011.
The movie is set in the 80s, and focuses on the friendship between an illiterate father and his neighbour who helps him pen letters to his daughter studying abroad.
Chai says that he has been developing the story for many years, and that he has found the perfect platform to launch it with the initiative.
Both mm2 Entertainment and Cathay Cineplexes see this initiative as an opportunity to promote Singapore films as an expression of the Singaporean identity, and making the films available at all eight outlets also allows for such films to be accessible to all Singaporeans.
