Several strangers in Singapore banded together to carry out a cat rescue in a canal.

Their quick-thinking actions and care for a fur friend has tugged at the internet's collective heartstrings.

Cat stuck in a canal

One Twitter user, Nav, documented the Dec. 12, 2019 incident in a series of photos.

The tweet has since been retweeted 2,100 retweets and nearly 2,000 likes.

Nav shared with Mothership that she had been walking along a canal near Bedok Reservoir with her mother at around 12:30pm, when the pair came across a group of three or four passers-by gathered along the side of the canal.

It was then that she noticed a girl inside the canal, attempting to reach a stranded cat.

One photo showed the girl squatting in the deep canal, with water rushing in the middle, cradling the cat.

She had apparently climbed down into the canal via a ladder.

Nav said she heard from the other passers-by that they had called for help.

Animals found in canals risk getting drowned, especially during the rainy season where canals tend to get flooded quickly.

GrabFood rider joins rescue party

A GrabFood delivery rider then joined the rescue party to give the girl in the canal a helping hand.

The rider had apparently just finished a delivery and happened to pass by during his commute.

A second photo by Nav showed the two in the canal, feet bare and holding the cat in a towel.

After successfully retrieving the cat and wrapping it in a towel for warmth, Nav said the group tried to feed it and provide it with a makeshift shelter out of a cardboard box.

However, it ran away upon release.

"I think we were all glad that curiosity didn't kill the cat, but rather, our curiosity saved the cat instead," Nav said.

Nav also highlighted the incident to Grab in her tweet, to which Grab responded that they would "look into it".

Mothership has also contacted Grab for a statement, and will update the story when they reply.
