This is such an uncomfortable story to write.

It hurts just looking at this photo.

Warning: A distressing sports injury photo coming right up.

How it happened

The injury occurred 30 minutes before the match proper on Saturday, Nov. 2.

Tampines Rovers goalkeeper Syazwan Buhari, 27, was halfway through his warm-up session before the Komoco Motors Singapore Cup final -- an important match for his team against Warriors FC.

The freak injury saw Syazwan's left pinkie bent almost 45 degrees -- a sight that greeted him when he took off his glove.

Instead of freaking out and dropping out, he played the match.

Dropping out not an option

Syazwan told The Straits Times that pulling out was not an option as he would miss a final, and his team might suffer as it would be counted as one substitute.

But his injury could be a liability as it could be aggravated during the match.

Despite knowing the risks, Syazwan popped his finger back into place, taped it up, put on his glove, and taped his ring and little finger together some more.

He ended up making three saves.

Heroics in front of goal

Syazwan even saved a penalty from Warriors forward Sahil Suhaimi with four minutes left -- but the rebound was pounced and he conceded the goal eventually.

But Tampines eventually beat Warriors 4-3 -- acquiring a piece of silverware for the team that last won one in 2013.

Syazwan now has his first winners' medal in senior competitive football.

He last won the Sultan of Selangor's Cup in 2016, when he was part of the Singapore selection then.
