S'pore allegedly 8th cheapest city out of 55 cities to spend 24 hours in

Singapore is a day trip kind of place.

Singapore has been ranked eighth cheapest city in the world to spend 24 hours in.

If you're laughing out loud in disbelief, this finding was compiled and parsed by travel insurer, Columbus Direct -- so blame them if you disagree.

And the catch?

Singapore is ranked eighth out of 55 cities, which isn't exactly the most comprehensive list.

As comparison, there were 436 cities with between one and five million inhabitants in 2016.

And the data collated in August were scraped from sites such as TripAdvisor, and some entity called Numbeo, and released this week.

So, this means the numbers can only be as good as the reviewers who posted them, which is highly subjective and based on the individual's taste and tolerance for cheap things in a city -- which can be plentiful, but not to the liking of the tourists.

Interesting finding? Any?

The only interesting trend that can be gleaned is that eight of the top 10 cheapest cities are located in Asia.

The top 10 cheapest cities are:

Delhi, India

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Bangkok, Thailand

Seoul, South Korea

Taipei, Taiwan

Shanghai, China

Prague, Czech Republic

Singapore, Singapore

Agra, India

Barcelona, Spain

Beer expensive here

Also, the average price of beer in Singapore is exorbitant at £5.95 (S$10.41) -- this is likely owing to alcohol taxes.

This price in Singapore is equivalent to what people are paying for in Dubai, Paris and New York.

In Guangzhou, China, beer costs £0.87 (S$1.52).

The overall ranking was based on factors such as the cost of a bus tour, the number of free attractions, the availability of cheap food, the cost of beer, and the price of taxi rides, among others.

The data did not take into account price of hotels, which would very likely have skewed the data against Singapore's favour.

But since the finding is couched as a value-for-money stopover, hotels do not have to be factored in.

So, for backpackers and short-stay holiday-makers, Singapore can be part of your two-day stopover when you come by Southeast Asia for two weeks.
