On the day that a footpath ban on personal mobility devices (PMD) kicked in, Land Transport Authority (LTA) officers were out in force handing out warnings.
Responding to queries, LTA told Mothership that as of 5pm today (Nov. 5) over 100 warnings were given out to PMD users.
”LTA’s officers regularly patrol public paths island-wide,” they said.
#WeAreWatchingYou
In a Facebook post that utilised the hashtag #WeAreWatchingYou, LTA said that officers were deployed at Ang Mo Kio, Toa Payoh, and Jurong.
"We are issuing warnings at this stage to give users some time to adjust to the new rule," said the post.Until Dec. 31, 2019, users will be given time to adjust to the ban that will see PMDs barred from footpaths but allowed on shared paths, cycling paths and Park Connector Networks.
However, LTA warned that as soon as the adjustment period was over it would take a "zero-tolerance approach".
"Offenders will be liable for a fine up to S$2000 and/or jail up to three months," they said.
Commenters helping LTA
On the LTA's Facebook, commenters chipped in by posting of incidents where they had seen PMD users flouting the new rules.
The LTA told Mothership that it also acts on feedback from the public, including those given through MyTransport.SG mobile application.
Meanwhile, PMD users have been finding creative ways to get around the ban:
