Sengkang West Member of Parliament Lam Pin Min has accused opposition party leader Goh Meng Seng of fanning the flames during a dialogue session with personal mobility riders (PMD) riders at Anchorvale Community Club.

Lam met with PMD riders, many of whom did food delivery, on Tuesday evening, Nov. 12 to try to address their concerns after the e-scooter ban on footpaths.

More than 300 people showed up en masse, making it the largest meeting yet with a MP.

Lam's dialogue was out-of-bounds to the media, who could only watch the proceedings from the outside.

Called out

Lam wrote in a Facebook post on Wednesday morning calling out the behaviour of Goh, without naming names.

Goh is the secretary-general of People's Power Party.

Lam wrote: "Most people who came down today had genuine reasons to be there - except for a member of an opposition party who came to politicise the issue and stoke the emotions of those present."

"Such actions are irresponsible and abhorrent."

“They do not benefit anyone, and distracted us from the main objective of giving the PMD riding community support during this period and helping them to understand that there is help available for them.”

What happened at dialogue session

Lam told attendees that the e-scooter ban was a "difficult decision" for the government.

He reiterated the position of the authorities, which is to prioritise the return of safety to pedestrians on footpaths.

The dialogue session started out in a civil manner, but became tense towards the end when some of the attendees shouted at Lam.

Goh was one of those who questioned Lam pointedly.

His exact words could not be heard outside the venue, but he could be seen gesticulating animatedly at some points.

After he spoke, those in attendance cheered and applauded.

Many of the attendees also left the venue in a huff, some prematurely before the session proper ended, as they sounded their horns and shouted.

It was subsequently reported that Goh had made his presence felt at two dialogue sessions that one night.

Before arriving at Sengkang West, Goh was at Toa Payoh and had confronted Chee Hong Tat, a Senior Minister of State for Trade and Industry and Education, and a Bishan-Toa Payoh MP.

Chee was speaking to a group of PMD riders who worked as food delivery personnel, when Goh intervened and asked the MP pointed questions.
