A self-employed fruit distributor found his wife and employee in the master bedroom of his flat on the night of March 5 last year.
The 43-year-old fruit vendor, Han Bo, splashed his wife's alleged lover, 22-year-old Kan Chee Wai, with a kettle of boiling hot water during their confrontation, according to Shinmin Daily News.
Han was sentenced to jail for nine months for causing grievous hurt to Kan.
Wanted to forgive wife, but she wanted divorce
Shin Min reported that Han was woken up by noise coming from another room in the house on Mar. 5, 2018.
He got up to investigate and saw his wife and Kan coming out of the room. When confronted, both Kan and the woman pretended nothing happened. When Han went into the room, he discovered that his wedding photo and the family photo had been shredded.
The trio then went to the living room to discuss matters.
Han initially told his wife that he was willing to forgive her, and even said that he would give his wife's lover a sum of money if Kan agreed to leave her and return to Malaysia, Kan's home country.
However, Han's offer was refused and he lost his temper.
Han's wife then said that she wanted a divorce, saying that she would give him a sum of money and asked him to return to China, where Han was from.
He went to the toilet, but saw his wife and Kan getting intimate when he returned.
Feeling humiliated, Han then grabbed a kettle filled with boiling water, and splashed it on Kan, which scalded his face, neck, arm, and left eye.
Prior to that, Han also attempted to threaten Kan as he grabbed two knives - a kitchen knife with a 17cm blade and a chopper with a 18cm blade, and pointed the chopper at Kan.
Wanted to surrender himself
After scalding Kan, Shin Min reported that Han felt guilty, and sent Kan to Ng Teng Fong Hospital to treat his injuries.
The next day, Han planned to turn himself in to the police, but before he could do so, the police had already shown up at his doorstep.
The prosecution had asked for at least 12 months' imprisonment for Han, as the victim had suffered burn wounds on about 7.5 per cent of his body, hospitalised for four days, and was given 45 days' of medical leave.
However, the judge noted that the injuries did not cause permanent damage to the victim, and that Han had been suffering from severe depression at the time as well.
He was sentenced to nine months' imprisonment.
For causing grievous harm, Han could've been jailed up to 10 years, fined, or caned as well.
