An accident at a construction site in Novena occurred on Nov. 4, killing one and injuring another.
Crane collapsed at around 8:30am
A crane at a construction site along Jalan Tan Tock Seng collapsed.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) told Mothership they received a call for assistance at around 8:50am this morning.
Photos of the accident taken by bystanders of nearby buildings show the crane's arm completely collapsed at the end, and bent in the middle section as well.
SCDF revealed that one man was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, and another was conveyed to Tan Tock Seng Hospital.
According to workers at the construction site The Straits Times spoke to, the deceased was an Indian national.
The other man who was injured was reportedly a Bangladeshi, and had been hurt in his leg.
ST also spoke to a resident of a nearby apartment, who said that she heard a loud boom in the area at around 8:30am.
The 33-year-old resident known by the surname Goh shared that she spotted a worker stuck atop the collapsed crane as well.
Fortunately, the worker was able to climb down after 20 minutes.
The construction site is reportedly the location of a new 17-storey rehabilitation complex by TTSH, which is being built by the Ministry of Health.
According to ST, construction started in 2017 and is scheduled to be completed by 2022.
MOH has also provided a statement on the incident.
"The Ministry of Health (MOH) was informed of an incident involving the collapse of the jib of a tower crane at a worksite in Novena on 4 November 2019.
We are deeply saddened that one worker has died and another worker was injured from the incident. We are now working with the main contractor Kajima Overseas Asia (Singapore) Pte Ltd to render assistance to the deceased worker’s family, as well as to the injured worker.
Safety at our worksites is of utmost importance. We take a serious view of this incident. We are working with the contractor and the Ministry of Manpower to investigate the cause of the incident. In the meantime, work has been halted at the site."
