SMRT bus knocks down and kills 77-year-old man at Yishun junction

SMRT is assisting the police with their investigations.

On Oct. 29, a 77-year-old man who was involved in a road accident with an SMRT bus in Yishun passed away.

Breakdown of accident

The police were alerted to the accident which took place at the junction of Yishun Ave 5 and Ave 2 at around 10:10am.

The elderly pedestrian was conscious when he was sent to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The double-decker bus allegedly hit the 77-year-old man as it made a turn at the junction and dragged him underneath the bus for around 4-5m, The Straits Times reports.

An eyewitness said that the old man was crossing the junction with other people but did not manage to finish crossing the road when the traffic light turned red.

Aftermath of accident

The 29-year-old bus driver who was involved in the accident has since been suspended from driving and arrested for causing death by negligent act.

Margaret Teo, SMRT Corporation's chief communications officer, said the company is " saddened that the accident occurred, and have reached out to the family to provide support and assistance."

SMRT is also assisting the police with their investigations.
