5 new stalls to try at Artbox 2019, including chilli crab tacos, 11 flavours of mookata & Gudetama candy floss

Time to splash some cash.

Mega flea Artbox is back in Singapore from Nov. 15 - 17 and Nov. 22 - 24, 2019.

Instead of being held at the Bayfront area, this year's flea will take place at The Grounds@Kranji from 3pm - 11pm on event days.

For those who are unfamiliar, the flea is a blend of art, food, music and retail options, with over 300 regional and local vendors.

5 new stalls to look out for

Here's a first look at five new food and beverage finds at this year's event:

1) Teabrary (Booth CP8)

Teabrary is a bubble tea kiosk at Esplanade Xchange that was co-founded by Mediacorp artiste Vivian Lai in Sep. this year.

The brand has a sizeable range of beverages from milk tea, cheese foam tea, cold brew, to fresh fruit teas, with prices at the store starting from S$3 and going up to S$6.50.

At this year's Artbox event, Teabrary will be selling exclusive bottles of Ananas Tea (Dessert Tea) and Lemongrass Green Tea (Cold-brew):

Alternatively, customers who spend S$10 at Teabrary@Esplanade Xchange will receive a pair of express passes to Artbox.

2) Alley (Booth 55)

Alley is a food brand that was born in 2014 with Churros as their main food product.

At Artbox 2019, they will be introducing three new taco variations — lobster picolo tacos (S$16), chilli crabla tacos (S$12) and garlic aioli crab tacos (S$10).

We tried the lobster picolo taco and chili crabla taco and found both a refreshing twist from the usual Mexican tacos.

The toppings come pretty generous.

Do note that the chili crabla tacos are slightly on the spicier side, so people who can't take spice may want to opt for the garlic aioli crab tacos instead.

3) Oddball (Booth 82)

Oddball is the baby brand of Alley, specialising in ice cream that comes topped with freshly torched meringue.

Here's a video of their torching process:

A standard scoop of ice cream costs S$5.50 while an additional scoop of torched meringue is an extra S$2.

Members of the public can try their best selling flavours Lavender Honey, as well as Honey & Figs.

    4) Ja Kin Mukata (Booth 76)

Ja Kin Mukata is apparently the only mookata shop in Singapore that serves more than 15 flavours of meat.

It was founded by Kae Jiratchaya, a Thai lady who loves cooking and experimenting with new flavours.

The stall will be showcasing 11 flavours of meat at Artbox this year, some of which include mala, laksa, tom yum, garlic, basil, pad thai, curry, and teriyaki.

Each flavour costs S$6 per serving with a choice of chicken or pork, while a mix of two flavours costs S$8.

All meats are grilled on the spot and served with three signature Thai dipping sauces — suki, garlic chilli and seafood chilli.

    We tried four different flavours.

As well as pandan chicken and pad thai pork:

While the meats are tender and flavourful, do note that they take some time to be cooked and served i.e. be prepared to queue and wait.

    5) Candy Bar (Booth 71)

Candy Bar claims to be Singapore's first sculpted candy floss maker.

Making their entrance in Artbox for the first time this year, the stall sells a range of cotton candy in various cartoon designs from S$5 to S$10, depending on the character and its complexity.

Here's how they look stuffed into plastic containers:

And here's the Gudetama candy floss with eyes and mouth made from seaweed:

S$7 isn't cheap for cotton candy, but there's the novelty's factor, we guess.
