A Thai man has left his bride with debts supposedly worth 3.5 million baht (S$158,500) for their luxurious wedding party after disappearing during the event, Thai media Bangkok Post reported.

The incident happened in May, at Alvarez Hotel in the Thai district of Buri Ram.

Self-proclaimed billionaire

According to Noi, the bride's mother, her daughter first met the man at her father's funeral.

The daughter, known as Da, introduced Nut to her family, saying that he was a "self-proclaimed billionaire" who had proposed to marry her.

Noi added that the family did not know anything about Nut beyond these details however.

Separately, Wasant Thepnakhon, owner of Alvarez Hotel, stated that Nut also purportedly claimed that he operated chartered flights between Thailand and Hong Kong.

Left without paying for the wedding

On the day of the wedding, Noi said that Nut had left the premises without paying for the event.

Wasant added that Nut did not make any down payment for the wedding either. This resulted in Nut's bride and Noi's daughter, Da, becoming the debtor.

The bill for the wedding's venue, food and beverages reportedly came up to a total of 400,000 baht (S$18,120) alone.

Hotel staff were also reported to have repeatedly contacted Nut, until he eventually turned off his phone.

Cost disputed by wedding organiser

Thai media reported that the wedding's organiser, Doungruethai Wedding, had supposedly levied a bill that totalled 2.6 million baht (S$117,800).

However, the organiser subsequently disputed both the figure and involvement in the event.

She claimed that her team was hired for only 300,000 baht (S$13,590) as a sub-contractor, Bangkok Post reported separately.

Does not see how debt can be repaid

Noi said that Nut had produced a cashier's cheque of 1.6 million baht (S$72,500) as a dowry.

However, the cheque disappeared after the wedding ceremony, and the family did not have a clue as to where it supposedly went, Bangkok Post said.

Noi said that she did not see how the family can repay the debt, given that she has to take care of her bed-ridden mother.

In the meantime, the hotel has stated that Da can repay the bill in installments, while the organiser is suing the bride for the unpaid invoice, The South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported.

The bride has also sought the help of an activist lawyer, and is reportedly filing for divorce.
