Kitties on Okishima cat island, & other cat islands, are safe from Typhoon Hagibis

That's a relief.

Typhoon Hagibis has devastated parts of Japan.

It has left at least 11 dead, and 15 missing.

Thankfully, Typhoon Hagibis has moved away from the island as early as Sunday morning, Oct. 13.

One persistent fear among people online has been the fate of cats that were situated on one of the Japanese cat islands.

Now to be clear there are a lot of cat islands in Japan, so to be specific, it was Okishima.

Perhaps mistaking it for one of the uninhabited islands in Lake Biwa, many were worried the cats wouldn't be able to find shelter by themselves

The one in question is located in the Shiga prefecture. Which is really far from the main areas impacted by the storm.

Here are some of the most recent Instagram and Twitter posts about the place.

So definitely not wrecked by any means.

Here's a local describing the situation at Okishima yesterday.

Which roughly translates to:

"The typhoon approached the shiga prefeture again at about 3pm.

The winds are not as strong around Okishima, but rain continues to fall for a long time. I've prepared a lot of food and I'm going to have freshly prepared tea."

Another resident noted increased rainfall yesterday, but didn't really notice too much of a change in wind speed as well.

Which appears to tally with other accounts of areas within Shiga prefecture.

In fact here's the warning level of the area surrounding Lake Biwa.

So while there might have been some heavier-than-usual rain, it was only judged to be at an advisory level of danger.

For reference, you can see just how devastated the Tokyo area is.

In fact, the latest releases by Japan Meteorological Agency indicates that there is little risk of flooding there.

In fact, one of the visitors to Okishima today took some lovely photos of cats doing what they do best.

All while everyone was absolutely panicking about their safety.

People were so worried, one of them actually messaged a woman who they assumed to be situated on the island itself.

And thankfully, the felines appear fine.

However the women was actually in Fukuoka, on another cat island. But good to know that they are fine there as well.

If you are still iffy about the cats on these other islands, it is nice to note there are already caretakers asking for donations of old bathtowels to keep the cats warm for the coming winter, so there are definitely people there to take care of them.

Here are some photos of how the cats were being sheltered in 2017 when the weather got colder.
