A woman from Nanyang Technological University (NTU) claimed in a Oct. 21 post on the NTU Confessions Facebook page that she was molested by a driver she met on the Ride Kakis platform.
Here is the post:
Suspect arrested
Responding to Mothership queries, police confirmed that they have received a report regarding the case.
A 25-year-old male suspect was arrested for outrage of modesty.
Investigations are ongoing.
NTU didn't receive report
According to The New Paper, Associate Professor Victor Yeo, who is Deputy Associate Provost (Student Life) at NTU, said that the student has not contacted the school regarding the incident.
He said:
"The university is very concerned to learn of this and strongly encourages the student to contact her school or the Student Affairs Office, so that we can support her as we have not yet received any report on the alleged incident.
We also advise all students to be aware that groups offering ride services are unregulated.
Unlike official ride-hailing apps and public transport, they may pose certain risks."
Ride Kakis suspended
As of Oct. 21, 11:38pm, the Ride Kakis Telegram channel has been suspended until further notice.
It is unclear whether the alleged molestation incident caused the suspension of the channel.
The incident
According to the Facebook post, the incident happened in mid-October.
A driver who was not from NTU, offered a ride to the victim via Ride Kakis.
Ride Kakis a peer-to-peer ride sharing platform on social messaging app Telegram.
The carpooling group is mainly used by NTU students.
Instead of bringing the victim to her intended destination, the driver brought her to a secluded carpark and proceeded to molest her.
