On Oct. 8, 2019, a 67-year-old security guard, Marimuthu Jayabal, was sentenced to three weeks' in jail for molesting a 20-year-old male student on a train.

Breakdown of the incident

On July 4, 2018, the 20-year-old victim, whose identity cannot be made known due to a gag order, boarded a train at Yio Chu Kang MRT station at around 3:25pm, according to CNA.

Marimuthu boarded the train and sat beside the victim.

Although the victim looked away and ignored Marimuthu, the latter kept on staring at him and even licked his lips.

Feeling uncomfortable, the victim moved away but Marimuthu gestured for the victim to sit next to him.

Marimuthu also gestured to his shirt pocket and suggested to offer the victim money.

The victim continued to ignore Marimuthu but the latter went to sit next to him and even showed him a pornographic video on his phone.

Marimuthu then ran his hands over on the victim's thigh which made the latter get off the train earlier at Bukit Gombak.

However, Marimuthu relentlessly followed the victim and even gestured at him to slow down.

The victim then decided to lodge a report at the police station.

Charges faced

According to Today, Marimuthu represented himself at the court session.

He said that he is afraid of handcuffs, darkness and confinement, and asked for a fine instead of a jail term.

Marimuthu said that he is a Christian and has repented.

He added that he is the only sole breadwinner of his family and has to support a sickly daughter and a wife with "old-age ailments".

Deputy Public Prosecutor Joshua Lim, however, asked for at least three weeks' jail term for Marimuthu as he made advances on the victim repeatedly which are "traces of premeditation".

Lim also added that there is a need to signal deterrence to offenders from molesting others.

Marimuthu pleaded guilty to one charge of using criminal force on his victim to outrage his modesty.

A second charge of showing him pornography was also considered.

He wailed after his court session ended and was sentenced to jail for three weeks.
