The unrest in China's Special Administrative Region of Hong Kong has persisted for the past 19 straight weeks with no end in sight.

Angry rant

Protesters have griped about the unresponsiveness of the government to their demands, vowing to never stop protesting until the rest of their four demands were met.

But a certain pro-democracy legislator, Tanya Chan, who is a founding member of the Civic Party, has won praise among the pro-democracy camp for fighting for their rights in the Legislative Council (LegCo).

Chan has lashed out at the pro-government camp, accusing them of ignoring the voices of the people.

The video has been watched more than 600,000 in three days.

She first started her minute-long rant by asking why the pro-Beijing camp had not asked the government to withdraw the now-abandoned extradition bill after as an estimated one million people took to the streets on June 9.

"Where were you guys? Who was playing politics? Who said the livelihoods of people were not important?"

She added: "The LegCo should be the one monitoring the government, keeping them in check, and going against them if necessary!"

Chan also slammed the pro-government camp for being unnecessarily insensitive to the problems faced by Hongkongers.

"You guys still dare to laugh?"

"Can't afford to wait around for y'all to help the people"

Pointing to LegCo member Wong Kwok-Kin, who belongs to the pro-Beijing Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong, Chan said:

"That day, Wong Kwok-Kin was sitting right there when we were talking about a girl who got molested.

She was telling others about her grievances, yet he was playing with his phone and laughing!

What kind of person is this?"

Chan further criticised the pro-government camp for not doing enough for the protesters who were arrested, even accusing the police of being "overboard" in their execution of the law:

"Who said we don't hold meetings? We are all sitting down here in a meeting.

The amount of time you want to spend equals the amount of time that I've to spend.

The job of legislators are not just having meetings. You guys are just hand-raising robots.

We still have much work to do. Gary Fan has suggested earlier, we don't have to help those who were arrested?

If the police haven't gone too overboard, if the police haven't stopped lawyers from seeing the ones who were arrested...

I've tried it before, they didn't allow me to see them.

So what do we do?

If we, as residents, as legislators, don't protect them, who would?

Don't tell me you guys in the pro-government camp will go defend them?

We might as well call it a day!"

The camera then cut to the rows of mostly empty seats in the chamber.

Won praise from protesters

Chan's rant captivated protesters, who felt she was truly caring for the Hong Kong people.

"Other than working hard, your health is most important!"

"Thank you. That was a good ruckus!"

Pro-democracy lawmakers heckled Carrie Lam

Most recently, on Wednesday, Oct. 16, pro-democracy legislators donned masks of Chinese President Xi Jinping's face and heckled Chief Executive Carrie Lam as she tried to deliver the annual policy address.

Chan previously said Lam was to be blamed for her policies that caused the unrest in the past four months, adding that she should quit as she has "no governance ability".

According to South China Morning Post, Chan was kicked out of the chamber on Wednesday for heckling along with other lawmakers.

But while she called Lam a "common enemy" of the public, she said the pro-democracy lawmakers are still willing to work with the government on resolving urgent issues such as building schools and hospitals.
