A toddler in Wuhan, China suffered a tremendously unfortunate mishap when she fell onto a chopstick she was holding.

Pierced the mouth, cerebellum and jugular vein

The toddler, aged 17 months, had recently just learned how to walk, albeit unsteadily, reported Asiaone via Sin Chew Daily.

The girl, who was not named, was apparently unable to sit still during dinner, and was walking around with a chopstick in hand as her parents fed her.

She suddenly fell down face first, causing the chopstick she was holding to pierce through the roof of her mouth.

Her screaming caught her parents' attention, and the toddler was then rushed to a hospital to undergo a CT scan and surgery.

A picture of the scan below shows how the chopstick entered the girl's head.

It was discovered that not only had the instrument went through her mouth, part of it had punctured her brain.

2 cm of the chopstick had entered her cerebellum, the part of the brain that coordinates body movement, and had also pierced her internal jugular vein.

The chopstick missed the girl's brain stem, which was fortunate as that would have killed her.

The toddler is currently going through treatment in the intensive care unit as she runs the risk of contracting an intracranial infection, reported Asiaone.

Following the incident, doctors warned parents to watch over their children during mealtimes, and prevent them from wandering around.
