Hong Kong police shoots man in chest with live round during protests: HK media

He was taken to hospital afterwards.

A Hong Kong protester has been shot in the left lung by a live round fired from the police amidst an ongoing protest in the city during China's National Day, Hong Kong media i-Cable News reported.

The Editorial Board of Hong Kong's City University Student Union reported that the shooting has since been confirmed by the Hong Kong police themselves.

This makes it the first time that a protester has been shot with a real bullet by the the authorities in four months.

Man asked to be sent to the hospital afterwards

According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP), the incident happened at Hoi Pa Street in Tsuen Wan, at about 4:35 pm.

Videos and image stills are circulating which appear to show a man being shot in the chest at close range.

Hong Kong police brought the man to an ambulance

Hong Kong media The Stand News further reported that the man could be heard on camera saying that his chest hurt and that he wanted to be sent to the hospital.

Additionally, he revealed his name (Tsang Tsz Kin) to a reporter.

The man did not get handcuffed by police, and was seen trying to open his eyes while waiting for ambulance to arrive.

Once paramedics arrived, they were seen putting an oxygen mask on the man, securing his neck, then carrying him to the ambulance on a stretcher.

The live stream of i-Cable News further reported that the man is in critical condition.

RTHK has also reported that one person is in critical condition, amidst reports of 15 people in total being injured.

CNN reported that the person in critical condition is currently at Princess Margaret Hospital in Kwai Chung in the New Territories.

However, it stated that it was unclear whether the person shot today was the protester.

SCMP reported that two lawyers arrived at the hospital to offer legal counsel, followed by the family of the man who was shot.

Protesters at Admiralty fall silent after receiving news that protester has been shot

Another tweet by Hong Kong-based author Antony Dapiran showed that protesters at Admiralty subsequently fell silent in response to receiving the news about the man being shot.

One of five live rounds fired so far

SCMP further reported that the bullet was one of five live rounds that have been fired thus far amidst the ongoing protests, since the day started.

Two more shots were fired skywards at the junction of Waterloo Road and Nathan Road in Yau Ma Tei.

Meanwhile, another two shots were fired at Sha Tsui Road, in Tsuen Wan.

Hong Kong Free Press reported that the police also fired tear gas at protesters at this location.
