Noor Abukram, 16, was disqualified from a cross-country Division One Northwest meet in Ohio on October 19.
The reason for that disqualification? She was wearing a hijab, and had not submitted a waiver to participate with religious headwear.
According to an interview with CNN, she had never encountered this problem before. And she was apparently told of the disqualification after she had ran her personal best in the five km race.
Noor told CNN:
"It was like your worst nightmare to have to compete and then find out that you got disqualified and it's because of something that you love,"
Noor also only found out there was an issue after she couldn't find her name on the scoreboard.
The Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) has said that her results were voided as she failed to sign a waiver to wear the hijab before the race.
That particular ruling might be on the way out though, as OHSAA is looking at ways to ensure religious headwear does not need a waiver in the first place.
The entire thing even set off a hashtag in support of Noor.
Go ahead and try to disqualify her from this cross country run — but you could never disqualify her willpower, never put out her fire, never dismantle her foundation. We got your back, Noor. She will speed through the finish line EVERY s i n g l e time. You got this #LetNoorRun pic.twitter.com/EijYRakLjQ

I’m ashamed of my hometown, everyone that’s arguing that she needed “extra paperwork” to wear her hijab is part of the problem No athlete should be singled out or be required to submit separate paperwork to participate while wearing a religious garment #letnoorrun #istandwithnoor https://t.co/g4anwxoiPc

Outrun
Despite the hullabaloo and well-wishes, Noor was busy doing what she did best.
She ran another personal best a little over a week later.
