A polytechnic student, Nicholas Ting Nai Jie was riding pillion with his girlfriend on his e-scooter when he knocked down a middle-aged lady near a bus stop along Pasir Ris Street 51 back in Sep. 17, 2016.
He was going at about 14 to 15km/h near the bus stop and did not sound the horn to alert pedestrians as he sped along.
Unfortunately, Ang Liu Kiow, 56, was at that time stepping out of a departing bus.
While Ting applied his brakes, it was too late, and he collided into her.
According to CNA, Ang fell and hit her head, vomiting up yellowish fluid.
Ting called the police for help and Ang was sent to the Changi General Hospital.
Ang slipped into a month-long coma following the incident.
According to an article by The New Paper, even after she got out of the coma, things were still real tough for the family.
Ang was left with severe brain injuries, and it cost the family about S$2,000 a month to take care of her.
Ang's husband, 56-year-old Leong Loon Wah, earns around S$2,500 as an odd-job labourer, and a part-time labourer.
In 2018, Ting was given a short detention order and was ordered to perform 100 hours of community service.
Sue for damages
Shin Min Daily News reported on Sep. 30, 2019, that Leong had sued the 20-year-old Ting for S$370,000 in damages caused by his negligence.
The medical report showed that Ang will not be able to live independently for the rest of her life and will require constant supervision.
She will also most likely be wheelchair bound.
Ang has not been able to follow simple instructions and fails to differentiate day and night, recognise people, such as her own children.
Her speech remains impaired.
Considering her lifetime medical expenses, Leong is suing for compensation of S$364,645.
Leong is represented pro-bono by lawyers from Drew & Napier.
The case will be heard in the High Court.
