Mandatory inspection for registered e-scooters every 2 years in S'pore starting Apr. 2020

Existing e-scooters registered with LTA also need to be inspected before Apr. 1, 2020.

All registered e-scooters in Singapore will have to undergo a mandatory inspection every two years, starting April 2020, to ensure that they are safe for use.

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) announced this new inspection regime on Monday, Oct. 7, 2019.

 

Mandatory free inspection for existing registered e-scooters

Prior to then, the agency also announced that existing registered owners of e-scooters are required to bring them for a mandatory inspection.

LTA will send these owners a notice to bring their devices in for this free inspection at one of these nine e-scooter Inspection Centres:

  5. VICOM Ltd (20 Changi North Crescent Singapore 499613)
  6. VICOM Ltd (23 Kaki Bukit Avenue 4 Singapore 415933)
  7. STA Inspection Pte Ltd (249 Jalan Boon Lay Singapore 619523)
  8. VICOM Ltd (511 Bukit Batok Street 23 Singapore 659545)
  9. JIC Inspection Services Pte Ltd (53 Pioneer Road Singapore 628505)

These are open from Monday to Saturday between 8am and 5pm.

Those who fail to send their devices for inspections by the stipulated deadline will face a fine of up t0 S$1,000 and/or a 3-month jail term, said LTA.

From Apr. 1, 2020, all e-scooters will need to pass an inspection before they can be registered for use.

Additionally, retailers and rental businesses will only be able to display or rent devices which have passed inspection and carry the registration mark.

Speaking in Parliament on the same day, Senior Minister of State for Transport, Janil Puthucheary confirmed that PMDs will be subjected to inspections every two years.

He added that LTA is also looking into upstream measures including import controls to tackle the problem of non-compliant PMDs.
