Six members of parliament (MPs) are playing in a charity football match to raise awareness of dyslexia this Sunday, Oct. 6, 2019.

Raising funds for children with dyslexia

The six participating MPs include the secretary-general of the Workers' Party (WP) Pritam Singh and fellow WP members Daniel Goh and Faisal Abdul Manap.

They will be joined by MPs Teo Ser Luck, Seah Kian Peng and Chong Kee Hiong from the People's Action Party (PAP).

They will be playing in the same team as local football icons Fandi Ahmad, Aleksandar Duric, Rafi Ali and Lim Tong Hai.

This team will go up against a team of celebrities and F17 Football Academy coaches, including artistes like Andrew Lua and Charlie Goh.

Wear red to show support

There will be a total of three 30-minute matches at Jalan Besar stadium.

Tickets for the match are priced at S$20 each and participants are encouraged to wear red to show support to children with dyslexia.

All funds raised will go to a bursary fund for children with dyslexia and other Specific Learning Differences who come from lower-income families.

The families can use this financial aid to access specialist services that the children need.

More about children with dyslexia in Singapore

According to the Dyslexia Association of Singapore (DAS), about 23,000 students from preschool to secondary school levels are diagnosed with dyslexia that is severe enough to require intervention.

These students may also have other learning difficulties, such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

More than half of DAS students qualify for bursaries, and the social enterprise aims to raise S$1 million every year to support these students in need.
