The outlet was brought in by Aston Soon, the owner of Astons Specialities.

According to 8 Days, Soon was a long time patron of Ginkakuji before he decided to open the shop in Singapore.

His aim is to make quality and affordable wagyu accessible for home cooks in Singapore.

Meats available at Ginkakuji

Some of the meats available at Ginkakuji include tenderloin steaks, sirloin steaks, as well as chuck short ribs and pork.

Two types of wagyu are available — A5 (excellent) and A3 (average) — with the numbers referring to the beef's marbling and colour.

8 Days reports that Soon's partner in Japan works directly with farmers in the selection process, so he is certain that the air-flown Japanese wagyu is of top quality.

Among the premium offerings sold at Ginkakuji are the A5 Akami Shabu Shabu at S$18 per 100 grams, which is around half the price of some of its competitors (who, to be fair, probably procure their steaks differently).

For something even more extravagant, shoppers can opt for the A5 Premium Loin Shabu Shabu, which costs S$26 per 100 grams, or the Premium Sirloin Steak at S$28 per 100 grams.

Otherwise, more modest cuts (relatively speaking) include the A3 Japanese Striploin Steaks, which sell at S$17 per 100 grams, or Wagyu Dices at S$6.88 per 100 grams.

The store also serves cooked food such as pork loin katsu (S$4.50), mince katsu (S$4), and ready-to-eat gyudon ingredients (S$7 for a 200g pack).
