More than 150kg of fruits and packed food were seized by customs agents at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Manila from six travellers, after it was revealed that they lacked an import permit for the food.
The six travellers consisted of five Singaporeans and a Chinese national, according to The Straits Times.
According to The Philippine Daily Inquirer, the confiscated food items consisted of 96kg of grapes and passion fruit, as well as 65.7kg of siew mai, char siew pau, rice with meat toppings and other food.
The six travellers arrived on a private plane
Bureau of Animal Industry veterinary inspector Nilo Cristal said that the six arrived on a private plane in Manila on Oct. 14, and that they were planning to play at a casino in Pasay City for a few days.
However, as they could not show import permits for the food, the food was seized by customs agents the next day.
The food was then turned over to the relevant authorities at the airport.
ST reports that the six flew from Singapore on a Gulfstream G450 owned by Bloomberry Resorts and Hotels, which operates the Solaire Resort and Casino, one of the biggest integrated resorts in Manila.
The Singaporeans were identified as Wong Yew Choy, Chua Hoe Beng, Koh Siew Hak, Low Chen Yang Marcus and Dexmond Koh Wei Shun, who are men aged 28-57.
The Chinese national who was with them was a 33-year-old woman named Yuan Fengxia.
The six individuals were not charged or held at the airport, but it is still unclear why they required so much food for the trip.
