The National Environment Agency (NEA) stated on Sep. 13 that three cases of locally-transmitted Zika virus infection have been confirmed in Singapore.

This is the first Zika cluster of 2019.

First Zika cluster in Serangoon Gardens

The three cases involve residents in the vicinity of Serangoon Gardens, at Hemsley Avenue.

The Zika cluster is located near a dengue cluster, where eight cases of dengue fever were identified on Aug. 20 at Bridport Avenue, Cowdray Avenue, Huddington Avenue, Portchester Avenue and Tavistock Avenue.

The Zika virus is spread through the bite of a female Aedes mosquito, similar to dengue.

Only about one out of five Zika virus infections are symptomatic.

The Zika virus can be transmitted from the pregnant woman to her foetus, and infection can cause certain birth defects.

Residents and visitors in the area are urged to be vigilant, as there could still be asymptomatic or mild, undiagnosed cases, which might lead to further transmission of the Zika virus.

Measures taken against Zika virus

Indoor spraying of insecticides and outdoor misting have been carried out at the inspected premises.

Thermal fogging will also be carried out to eradicate adult mosquitoes found outdoors.

Residents are also advised to practise the 5-step mozzie wipeout to prevent mosquito breeding at home.

Should members of the public feel unwell, especially with symptoms such as fever or rash, they are advised to see a doctor, and inform their doctors of the location of their residence and workplace.
