An escalator in Waterway Point shopping mall in Punggol dislodged on late Saturday morning.

Photos of the dislodged escalator showing at least three misaligned steps towards the end of the ride were shared to Facebook and HardwareZone forum.

Eyewitness accounts

According to these eyewitness accounts, the incident occurred just before noon on Sep. 28, 2019.

The down-riding escalator is located outside Maxi-Cash in basement one.

The woman, Melissa Chong, who posted photos of the dislodged escalator to Facebook, wrote: "A near miss for me since I was two steps away from getting on it."

She also said that the security personnel arrived in less than five minutes to direct the crowd away.

According to her, no one was seriously hurt.

The forum post also provided a similar eye-witness account.

The forum user wrote: "Was having lunch at Bali Thai when heard people screaming. Went to have a look and saw about three parts of the escalator stairs dislodged at the end of the track."

The forum user also said no one was injured.

Waterway Point put up a Facebook post on Sunday, Sep. 29, at about 5pm to apologise for the inconvenience caused as the escalator undergoes repairs and safety checks before operations are resumed.

Incidents involving escalators in Singapore are common enough, given the ubiquity of these contraptions all over the island.
