Unfortunately, animal cruelty still exists today.
Sedated puppies and cats found
In a Facebook post, the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) said on Sep. 6, 2019, that ICA officers found 12 sedated live animals within a car.
The car was stopped at the Woodlands Checkpoint.
10 puppies and two cats had been packed in a modified speaker box compartment in a Singapore-registered car, which was entering Singapore.
An ICA officer found the vehicle suspicious, and referred it to further checks.
A 32-year-old Singaporean female driver and a 26-year-old Filipino female passenger were referred to NParks for investigations.
The animals are now under the care of NParks.
Illegal act
Importing any animals or birds into Singapore without a licence is illegal.
Offenders found smuggling animals might face up to S$10,000 fine and/or up to one year of imprisonment.
Offenders of an act of cruelty to animals will also face up to S$15,000 fine and/or up to 18 months of imprisonment.
Transporting animals in such a manner without the right conditions may result in suffering or even death of the animals.
In addition, such a method of concealment may also be used to smuggle security items into Singapore.
ICA will continue to conduct security checks to safeguard Singapore's security.
