Jay Chou has recently dropped his new single Won't Cry on Sep. 16, 2019.

The music video has been watched more than 20 million views in a week.

What's the music video about

The music video tells a love story of how the female lead has been generally supportive of the male lead, who is a passionate photographer.

The female lead helped the male lead to apply to a photography course secretly.

She also saved up enough money from working at a bubble tea shop to buy the male lead a camera that he always wanted.

Other hidden meaning?

Some netizens, however, insinuated that working at a bubble tea shop is more profitable than being a photographer, as the photographer was seen as too broke to even afford the camera that he wants.

In the music video, the Hasselblad 503CW costs 232,000 yen (S$2,973).

In Japan, a cup of bubble tea is about 500 yen (S$6.40) to 600 yen (S$7.70), which means the camera costs about 460 cups of bubble tea.

Here's one Pakkin Leung who summarised this interpretation of the story with an image post and a caption that said "most professional photographers will disagree":

Translation:

Jay Chou's new MV is a moving story about how the male lead uses Canon 5D for work and the female lead sells bubble tea to buy a Hasselblad medium format camera 503CW for him.

The MV taught us:

Photography makes three generations poor, single-lens reflex camera ruins one's life. Photographers usually cannot afford expensive equipment and workshop fees but bubble tea is really profiteering.

Of which, "photography makes three generations poor, single-lens reflex camera ruins one's life" is a self-deprecating Chinese meme phrase to describe how one can be drawn towards photography once you get started.

To be fair, it was not explicit that the male lead could not afford the camera.
