14-month-old Hadijah has been drinking coffee daily since she was six-months old.

Quoting Kompas, World of Buzz reported that the toddler was born in a village in Polewali Mandar, West Sulawesi in Indonesia.

Income of S$2 a day

Hadijah currently drinks five cups of coffee a day (about 1.5 litres) as a substitute for milk.

The exact type of coffee is kopi tubruk, made from coarse coffee grounds that are boiled along with solid sugar.

Her parents, Sarifuddin and Anita, cannot afford anything else.

The couple earns about IDR20,000 (about S$2) per day, all of which goes to their daily expenses.

On lucky days, they earn up to twice as much, Jakarta Post reported.

But it is barely enough to cover their basic needs.

They work as copra (dried coconut kernels) extractors, but there are days when there is no work for them.

Now, Khadijah is so used to the coffee that she cannot do without it.

World of Buzz quotes Anita as saying,

“We have no choice, our income is not enough to buy milk for her. We’re forced to give her coffee every day and she can’t sleep if she doesn't drink her coffee. She would even throw a tantrum asking for her coffee before bed.”

Toddler active and healthy

According to Jakarta Post, Polewali Mandar Health Agency has run a check-up on the toddler and found no abnormalities in her growth and development.

Long term consumption of sugar and caffeine, however, could be detrimental to Khadijah's health.

The family was also given milk and food assistance from the agency.
