Jackie Chan has been in the news recently for some controversial comments.

However, he's now served his public penance with the emergence of the following clip on Weibo:

Kicked by a somersaulting monk

According to 8 Days, Chan was performing at an event held at the Bird's Nest Stadium in Beijing on Aug. 18.

He had been midway through a soulful performance of a Chinese national song, Country when the 65-year-old actor-cum-singer stepped too close to one of the other stage performers -- a somersaulting Shaolin monk.

For his efforts, Chan received an acrobatic kick to the shoulder from the yellow-clad monk.

Yet, it was his reaction that captured the imagination of the online world, with some screen grabs of a clearly startled Chan pulled from video footage of the incident.

Ever the consummate performer, Chan didn't let the assault unsettle him, and continued singing the rest of the song.

Chan's reactions

Upon seeing that the clip had gone viral, Chan took to Weibo to comment on it:

"I just heard from a colleague that the clip of me getting kicked by a young monk has started trending," he wrote.

"Sigh, I want to say sorry to him. It must have been because I walked to the wrong spot on stage. Good that the kid's foot was alright. Thanks for your hard work everyone!"

Weibo has its say

Users on Weibo were also quick to weigh in on the incident.

"Young Shaolin monk: That's it, there goes my lunch box."

"Big brother was calm and composed."

"(Shaolin monk:) I once hit Jackie Chan till he was too scared to fight back."

"Big brother is really patriotic, I've never seen him wear any western suits. He always wears a Mao suit for important occasions, like award ceremonies and performances."

Fair to assume that last commenter didn't see Chan's action-comedy movie The Tuxedo.
